WanderKit

UX internship

I joined WanderKit as a product design intern working closely with the head UX Designer and another intern.
My first responsibility as an intern for WanderKit was to redesign the onboarding flow and splash screen.

Team:

UX Designer

Challenge

WanderKit’s mobile onboarding flow had a low completion rate and early user drop-off. Users reported confusion during signup, unclear next steps, and inconsistent visual feedback, creating friction before they even reached core product value. The team lacked clarity on why users were dropping off and how the onboarding could better align with evolving product strategy.

Objective

Improve user engagement during onboarding and increase the overall completion rate by making the experience more intuitive, clear, and motivating for new users.

Results

Across these efforts, WanderKit strengthened its user experience, clarified its product positioning, and saw measurable improvement in key metrics—most notably a 28% increase in onboarding completion and more informed decision-making for future product development.

Splash Screen

Splash Screen

After creating the new onboarding experience, we focused on creating a new splash screen. The current splash screen emphasized travel and WanderKit was trying to move away from traveling and into connecting people with shared interest.

Iterations

In the next following weeks, I conducted usability tests and interviews with potential stakeholders. This helped us identify which features we can leave out or include. It will also point out any flaws in the intuitiveness of the onboarding process.

With the development of the new splash page, I redesigned the sign in page to have a continuous flow and fit the new style guide.

Email vs Phone Number

It was clear in our usability testing that users would prefer connecting their accounts to their phone number. This would allow for easy a verification code to be easily autofilled and was the norm for other platforms that required authentification.

Takeaways

Labeling For Developers

Previously, I would name my screens based on the actions done on the page, but during this internship I collaborated a lot with the developers in which I learned the importance of labeling each screen in a way to help them easily update the app. For example, a screen I would previously label "Login," I learned to include the screen number and steps so it would look like "1.1a of 6_Onboarding_Sign In."
